Top 10 best NES games of all time

The NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) is an 8-bit console that has become almost legendary. Its capabilities, ultra-ergonomic controllers and, above all, its catalog of games filled with masterpieces have made it a worldwide success.
The best-selling NES game is Super Mario Bros, which sold over 50 million copies. But the console was also behind the creation of many other franchises under the aegis of Shigeru Miyamoto, such as the famous The Legend of Zelda saga. In all, no fewer than 1251 games (all regions combined) have been released on this console. To help you find your next must-have retro NES game, we’ve put together a top 10 list of the best NES games.

10. Double Dragon II : The Revenge

Double Dragon II: The Revenge was released in 1988 on arcades before being published on most consoles of the time, notably the NES. The is a beat ’em all with very successful platform passages. The player chooses to play as Billy or Jimmy Lee. The game is made up of 9 very varied levels (special mention for the helicopter) which will give you a hard time despite the relatively short duration of the adventure. A beat ’em all reference which has taken on a few wrinkles, but which remains more fun than some more recent publications of the genre.

9. Disney’s DuckTales 2

Disney’s DuckTales 2 joins this list of Disney titles created by Capcom and published on the NES. In fact, it ranks among the best in this category. A platform game, DuckTales embarks on the adventures of the Scrooge family as they search for treasure. A quest that will take the little troupe all the way to the moon. The game looks great for its time, and manages to integrate classic platformer mechanics with the world of Scrooge. The billionaire duck uses his cane to attack his enemies, his points are dollars and the level bosses are the series’ most emblematic antagonists. 8. Super Mario Bros 2

Mario Bro II is a Mario apart. In fact, it’s a Western adaptation of a Japanese game called Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic. The gameplay mechanics are therefore a little different. For example, Mario can’t kill his enemies by jumping on them. A heresy for some, making this opus the unloved of the saga. And yet, with its 20 levels (and almost as many bosses), the choice of 4 playable characters (Mario, Luigi, Toad and Peach) with different abilities, the game has solid arguments.

7. Kirby’s Adventure

Thanks to this title, a pink ball with an expandable stomach entered the pantheon of video game mascots: Kirby. Unlike many other games of the time, Kirby’s Adventure is very accessible, colorful and aimed at gamers looking for a little bubble of happiness and comfort between 2 games of Kid Icarus or Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles. Indeed, Kriby’s Adventure offers no challenge, just fun and original gameplay (stealing power from enemies). It’s all about having fun, without frustration: the basis of videogame entertainment.

6. Super Mario Bros

What can we say about Super Mario Bros? Quite simply, it’s the title that revolutionized the world of video games. It introduced many gameplay mechanics that we take for granted today, but which didn’t exist back then (jumping on enemies to kill them, horizontal progression, secret passages). It’s also one of the most famous soundtracks in video games. A reference that is not ranked higher in this top because, unlike other opuses in the saga, the character’s handling has aged considerably.

5. Mega Man 2

Mega Man, the first of its kind, was a real ordeal because of its difficulty. Capcom came back in 1988 with a more beautiful and accessible game, albeit still demanding. Take on the game’s 8 bosses, collect weapons and defeat Dr. Wily to complete this cult adventure.

4. Castlevania

Castlevania is an action-platformer released in 1986. Simple, effective gameplay, difficult progression, an impressive bestiary (jellyfish, newts, skeletons…), a battle against Count Dracula himself – everything is already present in this first installment of the saga.

3. Metroid

Metroid (1988), like Castlevania, invented game modes and gameplay concepts that are still in use today. Wandering through the various levels as Samus Aran is a bit like opening a book on the history of video games, only more fun.

2. The Legend of Zelda

The Legend of Zelda (1987) is a benchmark for all gamers, perhaps the best saga in video game history. This NES title lays the foundations for the episodes that follow. As Link, you set out to find the eight fragments of the Triforce, defeat Ganon and free Princess Zelda. Dungeons, character upgrades, combat, secrets, incredible music – all the mechanics of the action-adventure genre are already there. The first masterpiece of a long list.

1. Super Mario Bros. 3

Released in 1991, Super Mario Bros. 3 follows the recipes of the previous 2 games, but with better graphics. More secret areas, more action, more fun, and above all, the appearance of costumes to modify your abilities… If you are a fan of the saga, you must play this episode, because, in the list of old Mario, it’s one of the most enjoyable to play, even today.
